For generations, those of us with black bodies have been questioned, threatened and treated as if we’re less than human. I would love to move through the world without experiencing any sort of harassment, whether it be racist or meant as a compliment. Microaggressions can take on many forms, and actions that some nonblack people see as well-meaning — such as praising and trying to touch a black woman’s hair — can feel violating.

I say ‘I’m sorry’ way too much. I’m refusing to do so anymore — and I challenge other women to do the same.
