Comedian extraordinaire Amy Poehler is making her feature film directorial debut with a splashy new comedy called “Wine Country.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Poehler’s “Wine Country” will follow a group of longtime friends who visit Napa Valley to ring in a 50th birthday. The movie’s cast includes Rachel Dratch, Ana Gasteyer, Paula Pell, Maya Rudolph, Emily Spivey and Tina Fey. Spivey and Liz Cackowski, a Saturday Night Live alum, co-wrote the script that so far, sounds like “Girls Trip” but with wine instead of absinthe.
Since “Parks and Recs” ended in 2015, it feels like we haven’t seen much of Amy Poehler. Apart from her appearance as the perfectly cast character of Joy in Pixar’s “Inside Out,” her two other comedies, “Sisters” with Tina Fey and “The House” with Will Ferrell, faded quickly from the box office.
She made a few TV appearances, but her only recurring role was that of Susie in “Wet Hot American Summer” TV episodes. Hopefully, with Poehler in the director’s chair, things will be funny again. Her previous directing stints include episodes of “Parks and Recreation” and “Broad City.”
Even as Netflix has funded movies from Adam Sandler, Bong Joon-Ho and Noah Baumbach, it’s made an effort to include women on their roster.
They’ve helped produced and/or distribute Dee Rees’s “Mudbound,” Angelina Jolie’s “First They Killed My Father,” Yance Ford’s “Strong Island” and Ava DuVernay’s “13th.” You’ll notice the comedy section of the service remains pretty guy-heavy.
Poehler’s movie could help bring other women-centric comedies on board to the service’s over 100 million subscribers worldwide.
